Nature, Culture, Culinaries and hospitality at the oldest and most popular holiday road of Germany
The "Romantische Straße" exists since 1950. After World War II Germany was supposed to be attractive to visitors again and the "Romantische Straße" was founded. The road leads along 29 places and is 460 kilometres long.
The name "Romantische Straße" expresses the feelings local and foreign visitors have when seeing the middleage cities or the fairy castle Neuschwanstein. It´s fascintion and being put back to old times.
Travelling from Würzburg to Füssen means a journey through lots of middleage cities with interesting history, culture and art. The journey leads from north to south across river valleys, farmlands, meadows and through forests up to the hills.
46 natural and heritage sites located at the "Romantische Straße" are part of the UNESCO world heritage. A few examples are the residence of Würzburg inlcuding the courtyard garden and the residence square (part of the world heritage since 1981), the boundaries of the Roman Empire near Dinkelsbühl (part of the world heritage since 2005; extended in 2008), the aqueduct of Augsburg (part of the world heritage since 2019) and the pilgrimage church „Die Wies“ near Steingarden (part of the world heritage since 1983).
